Prospective Students
Prospective 1st Years Expand

Students whose parents wish them to enrol in First Year of the succeeding academic year should be guided by the schools’ Admissions and Participation Policy which is available on this site in the Policies section.

The Principal generally visits all of the feeder Primary Schools in the catchment area in the preceding autumn inviting them to the Open Night which takes place in the Comprehensive School in October/November. Please note the Principal does not visit the Primary schools of Listowel or Ballybunion.

While visiting the feeder schools they also are given an application form, School’s Code of Behaviour and Admissions Policy. By enrolling all students agree to accept these policies. These 6th class students are told of the closing date for applications which is usually 10 days after the Open Night. The date of which is advertised locally and on the website. On that night prospective students and parents get to tour the school, to see the facilities for themselves and to hear about the subjects on offer.

In December/January prospective students are informed whether they have been successful in acquiring a place as set out by the schools’ Admissions Policy. They attend a new 1st Years Examination in spring in which they complete a test based largely on reading, writing and maths. This is not an entrance exam in any shape or form. It is merely used to help the school to identify particular educational needs that the student may have.

These prospective students do not make any optional subject choices at this time. All students will sample the full range of subjects on offer in the Comprehensive School for the first 8 weeks of 1st year. They then choose their two optional subjects prior to the October midterm break.

In July (prior to school beginning) books from the book rental scheme can be collected by parents. Books related to the two options are distributed after October mid-term once final choices are made.

On the opening day new 1st Years are given an induction where they are shown around by senior students (Mentors); meet the Principal, Deputy Principal, Year Head and their Teachers. All questions concerning their timetable and their daily routine are answered again on that day.

Other Prospective Students Expand

It should be noted that other students whose parents wish them to enrol in the Comprehensive School either at the start of the school year or during it from another Post Primary School cannot be readily facilitated. In fact Tarbert Comprehensive largely cannot accept students mid cycle (either during the Junior or Leaving Certificate programmes). The natural entrance windows for outside students to the school are as new 1st Years, new TY students or new 5th Year (LC1) students.

All new students need to meet with the Principal and/or the Deputy Principal. Each prospective enrolment will be taken on a case-by-case basis. It will depend upon space available in the given year group and the availability of subjects for the potential student. The students’ former school(s) will be contacted for a reference and his parents should supply copies of his previous school reports and any other relevant documentation requested at the meeting.

Please see the School Admissions and Participation Policy (Page 5) for further details. A copy is available on request from the School office or the website.

All prospective students and their parents need to familiarise themselves with the school’s Code of Behaviour and by enrolling agree to accept them.
