Poetry Aloud is an annual poetry speaking competition open to all post-primary students on the island of Ireland. It is organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland.
Participants in the Poetry Aloud Competition recite selected poetry at various stages. Poetry Aloud does not ask students to perform their chosen poems dramatically; it demands great skill and refinement.
Each participant delivers his or her poems focussing on achieving a recitation as close as possible to the subtleties and nuances of the poets’ intended tone and voice.
Regional heats take place in Kerry and national finals take place in the National Library in Dublin. Two of our students Erin Da Silva and Jack MacMonagle were successfully selected from over 1,700 entries to take part in the national competition in Dublin in December 2016. In December 2015, Leaving Cert student Eve Dowling was selected to take part in the Dublin heat.
