Subject Options

Subject Options and Timetabling

Each year, Tarbert Comprehensive School constructs its subject option blocks based on the preferences of the incoming student cohort. This ensures that the subjects offered each year reflect genuine student interest and that the combinations available meet the needs of as many students as possible.

All students study Science in addition to two further optional subjects. To determine which subject combinations can be timetabled, students’ initial preferences are collected and analysed. From this information, the School generates option blocks that best satisfy the majority of students’ choices.

Because these option blocks are created anew each year, they vary from one cohort to the next. While every effort is made to accommodate individual preferences, it is not always possible for every student to access their ideal combination of subjects. Occasionally, two subjects that a student may wish to take are timetabled in the same block, meaning that a choice between them is required.

Where demand for a particular subject exceeds the number of available places, allocations are made according to the rank order of student preferences. For example, if two students select Art, the student who listed Art as their first preference will be prioritised ahead of a student who listed it as their second preference.

Although the School may offer a particular subject, it cannot guarantee that every student will be able to take it. This is because a number of practical constraints must be taken into account, including teacher availability, class size limits, timetable structure and the need to balance subjects across different option blocks. In addition, subjects with very low demand may not be viable to run, while subjects with exceptionally high demand may exceed available capacity. For these reasons, there is no automatic entitlement to study a particular subject simply because it is listed or offered.

The School’s priority is always to create a balanced and equitable timetable that provides the widest possible range of subject choices while ensuring that the needs of the many are met fairly and effectively.
